California’s Extreme Heat Action Plan outlines a strategic and comprehensive set of state actions to address extreme heat. Actions in the plan are organized around four tracks: building public awareness, strengthening community response, increasing the resilience of our built environment, and utilizing nature-based solutions. These tracks include established and recommended state actions to address extreme heat.

California committed to updating the Extreme Heat Action Plan in 2026 and every three years thereafter (SB 306, Caballero 2023) to promote comprehensive, coordinated, and effective state and local government action on extreme heat. Updates follow a cyclical timeline consisting primarily of interagency collaboration, drafting the update, public engagement and outreach, drafting, public comment, and finalizing the draft.
